Darrell also went to MUN and graduated with a degree in Arts and in Education, before joining what would become Great Big Sea. Rumored to have camped on Cape Cod and in New York as well as other places, we can assume that Darrell is an outdoorsy guy. He definitely has the most muscles!
He plays bass and "bones" on stage, but he also plays mandolin, guitar, fiddle, accordion and harmonica. Darrell is almost as likely to come out and greet fans after a show as Alan is. He always seems to make you feel special, making each fan encounter personal. He's been known to sing your name if it's one lucky enough to have a song written about it. And will always pose for photos. He is a lefty as his handwriting will reveal, but he plays guitar right-handed!
Darrell loves what he's doing and it shows on stage. His "Excursion 'Round the Bay" is a staple of GBS shows and he always manages to get through it without cracking up, even when Alan is trying his darnedest to make him laugh. He sings other songs such as "Jakey's Gin" and a more traditional "Beggarman" than the one Sean does on PLAY. He is the "Maximum Bass at all Frequencies, Man" affectionately known as the "Funkmeister." Darrell wins hands down, the vote for GBS b'y you'd most like to "chat and chew" with.
Darrell quit the band in the winter of 2002-3 to spend more time at home with his growing family. He is missed. |
