Murray Foster Bio
Murray Foster is no stranger to performing. A founding member of the popular Canadian band Moxy Fruvous since 1990, Murray was a beloved bass player/singer who endeared himself to many fans. They called him Mur-man and could often be heard yelling, “Way to go Murray!” (they still do this at GBS shows!) He is famous for his unusual shirts and throwing his bass into the air. We have yet to see that in his tenure in GBS. Check out this fan-run website on Murray to learn some more about his role in Moxy Fruvous.  Way To Go Murray!
Moxy Fruvous and Great Big Sea are not his only musical performance interests. Murray is also adept at playing the stand-up bass and does that in a country-leaning group called the Jayne Waynes as well as in a group called The Great Atomic Power.. He has also been known to put the upright bass to use for playing Jazz. Good thing he doesn’t have to lug that around with him in GBS!
Born on June 29th in the late 1960’s, he’s a tall quiet person. He wears glasses, as does Alan. Murray is also a friendly fan-greeter. He is patient with questions and kind in his answers. He also seems surprised when you compliment him on his playing with GBS. A very humble person, he doesn’t put on any airs about it either.
He’s come into his own since he officially joined GBS. This was not his first stint with GBS – he had subbed five weeks for Darrell during the Runrig Tour of the UK and Germany/Denmark. The reason was the birth of Darrell’s first son, Ben. At first very quiet and reserved, now he participates in and generates the mischief the b’ys are known for onstage. It took a while, but we are hearing his gorgeous baritone/bass voice more and more.
Beginning with Darrell’s verse in “Scolding Wife” (it’s now totally Murray’s) and continuing onto that incredibly overpowering bass in “General Taylor”, he continues to add color to the GBS palette in his gorgeous harmonies on the Something Beautiful* songs, especially in Shines Right Through Me and Beat the Drum.  He's also introduced his stand-up bass to GBS's fans as he played it for The Hard and the Easy Tour in 2006. Alan teases him about the Scolding Wife verse – says he sings it “too Ontarian” but when you hire someone from Ontario, that’s what you get, right?

Murray also shares a puzzling common statistic with Alan, Bob and Séan – an English degree. Graduated with an English degree and can’t get any other jobs, I guess! And he  shares a love of soccer with Kris.
Murray makes a fan's night as he chats after the show in Buffalo in 2003.
Murray is a serious musician and works hard.
Murray can take the teasing Alan gives him as well as give it back
