Endless Mountains
Sled Dog Race 2008
How do you have a sled dog race without snow? Luckily we didn't have to find out this year because Mother Nature cooperated and dumped a nice layer over farm, field and woods last weekend. There had been some discussion before that about how they were going to run the race without the white stuff. A few years ago, it was cancelled due to no snow, but this year the officals had decided to run the sleds on wheels (like they do in the summer) if necessary.

But like I said, it was not an issue and the drive into the Endless Mountains region of Northern Pennsylvania was breathtakingly beautiful. The photos just cannot do it justice!
The rising sun glistened off the snowcovered branches as we wound our way through Loyalsock State Forest in and around World's End State Park. The alarm had gone off at the ungodly hour of 3 AM as we dragged ourselves out of bed and packed for the race - extra sweatshirt with hood, warm socks, boots, mittens and thermal coveralls. We didn't have to worry about traffic jams as we traveled the Northeast extension of the PA Turnpike up to the Hickory Run exit. The sun had not yet risen as we grabbed coffee at the Wawa store and finally saw some snow-covered ground. They do winter well up here as the roads were in good condition, even the secondary roads! There was not much traffic as I stopped the car every so often to snap the photos above and below.
The race is on!
