Lillian was already at the Awards Industry Awards Brunch, up for an award in the Graphic Design category . Jim couldn’t find the coffee so I went to the place he recommended, Timothy’s, across from Mile One Stadium, to get small package of it. On the way back to the house, crossing the street in front of me, I see a woman who looks an awful lot like Lillian. The last time in St. John’s I saw someone who looked an awful lot like Darrell Power of GBS, it turned out to BE Darrell, so I went on my gut instinct. I honked but she paid no mind. So I turned the corner and waited for her. When she got to the car, I honked again and her look of surprise turned into a smile as I opened the car door. We went back home with coffee but no ECMA award in hand. But she seemed none the worse for wear. This had been the 5th time she’d been nominated and the fellow who won this time had won every other time plus one more.
She got a big hug at home when she announced she was “Five Time Loser Girl.” But since she was Jim’s FAVORITE" five-time loser girl", they laughed it off. He was pretty philosophical about it. “Five Time ECMA nominee sounds more impressive than Winner of the 2004 Graphic Artist Award. That’s only ONE time." We ate brunch and discussed the awards brunch with Lillian. The food at the Brunch was not wonderful there but we enjoyed hearing about it. She had picked up his ECMA bag which contained a lot of goodies, including a condom with an advertisement for the group Celtae and a teeny tambourine on a string from the CBC. Percussionist to the core, Jim jumped on that one right away. I think he wore it all weekend, if I’m not mistaken. Any time he heard a cool beat, we heard the tambourine.
The kids had written letters to Jim before I left and I read them to him after lunch. I had not had a chance to read them yet and found that some were quite touching. They are all confident he will win and had him at the Grammy Awards, even! After the letters, we retired to the studio to hear some tracks I had never heard before. There was one called “Go Philadelphia” that is unfinished but it’s for us – my class and I. What a thrill to have a song written for/about you!! I simply cannot tell you what my emotions were at that point!
I enjoyed listening to the outtake versions of songs from “In This World” and some recordings of former live performances. I found I had to stand up to enjoy the tracks as I needed to MOVE to really enjoy them. Boy, did I hear some great music today
I was shown how to use the computer in the room where I’m sleeping, but since it was an International keyboard, I was not used to where some of the keys were. Jim was surprised that I rely so much on actually LOOKING at the keys. I told him that we were not allowed to take typing in my High School if we weren’t in the Business track. That didn’t make sense to me at all since I would have to type quite a few term papers in college. Once I thought hard about where the keys would be on my keyboard at home, I did much better. But it took me a long time to type anything. Later on in the day, Jim felt sorry for me and switched keyboards. I feel very sheepish at this point.
Gypsy, the ca,t likes me. He is extremely friendly and I finally had to break down and pet him this evening. I am SOOOO allergic to cats! But when he meowed to get in at the window, I let him in and he wanted to sit on my lap and have his belly scratched! Purring away, he lay upside down on his back for about 10 minutes on my lap till he had gotten his fill of petting. Then I had to change my clothes and wash my hands because I was starting to have trouble breathing. |
