Andi & Anne's Gaelic College Adventure
8/8/02 Thursday
We had a very exciting start to the trip. Andi spent 8 hours on a bus getting to Philly driven by a driver who stopped several times in the middle of the superhighway for no reason. So no one was able to sleep on the way down to Philly and she was exhausted when she arrived. She grabbed a few hours sleep at my house and then we went off to see Karen’s exhibit at Moore College of Art Summer program for High School students.
After the art show we left for parts north. Drove the 300 miles to Framingham MA Red Roof Inn, which was in Natick, not Framingham and spent our first night together. It was the first of many nights where Andi threw pillows at me to get me to turn over and stop snoring. She also has this strange habit of throwing off all her bed covers by morning, whether I am snoring or not. LOL! What a pair we make!

8/9/02 Friday

Started the day at Dunkin Donuts and left for Maine. I refuse to take Route 9 thru Maine because I won’t drive on a road that disappears at frequent intervals. Interstate 95 would have taken us out of our way so Route 1 was the only route left to Canada for us. I drove as far as I could and then it was Andi’s turn. She drove thru most of Maine like a bat out of hell. I understand that I should be glad I was sleeping. Despite what we say about Maine, there were some really pretty scenes we passed.

Everywhere we drove there were signs that pointed to Machias. When we finally got to Machias, we found it was nothing! There was not much there and there were signs right in the town directing us to Machias. LOL!! I went back to sleep and was resting quite nicely when Andi yells frantically "Anne! We have a problem!”
I wake up with a start, fearing a mechanical failure on my 8-year-old car, which has 166,000 miles on it. Was it on fire? Did we have a blowout? Was the engine or transmission failing? My heart was in my throat.

“What’s the matter, Andi?”
“We are coming to a dead end. You said to go to Calais or St. Stephen’s but they are in opposite directions! Which way to go?”
“Is that it? Is that the problem?” I thought I was going to have to throw something at her!
LOL! Well, we went to St. Stephen’s, which was a good choice, despite the Customs official who knew not much.
“Where are you going?”
“To the Gaelic College.”
“Where?” cue puzzled look.
“Cape Breton”
“How long?”
“Three weeks.”
“Any alcohol or cigarettes?”
“No”
“Go on.”
