GBS at the Boarding House
Courtney, Cheryl & Howard
The National Parks Ranger who opened the show that night was a national treasure himself. He seemed genuinely delighted to be able to introduce Great Big Sea. “About the camera policy, (long pause) there is none!” he said. “That just NEVER happens! So snap away!” He also was tickled about the abolishment of the typical NO STANDING policy. “I’ve been told that everyone is encouraged to stand up and dance. If you are behind someone who is standing, we advise you to stand up or move to another area.” It was then I was very glad that I had positioned the blanket in the very front, even though we were seated substantially to the side.
At the Boarding House Park we saw Fran from Montreal with her hubby James and 2 kids, Kaesye and Finn, Lisa from Vermont, Kim Hix and her sis from Chicago, Fran and Bob from Winthrop, MA, Emily who went to BU at the same time as my daughter Heather, Howard and Cheryl from Orange NJ, Jen currently in Maine, Lynda and Christina who had flown in from Newfoundland at some point, Alex Sturbaum from Ontario, Michele from Long Island and Endi from I-don’t-know-where-currently. The audience was a typical GBS audience, all ages.
While he was announcing sponsors and such, Alan was itching to get onstage. He went up and down the steps to the stage several times, then fairly running across the stage to his mic as the SOS intro to Ordinary Day blared thru the speakers. The audience needed no other motivation to stand up. And my only show in 2011 began joyously.
