Groundhog Day 2 - Punxatawney Penguin
Today a few of us from Pennsylvania decided to celebrate Groundhog's Day 2003 in a unique Antarctic style.

To celebrate the tradition of Groundhogs day here in McMurdo we had to make a few substutions. Since there are no groundhogs to be found for thousands of miles it was in our best interest to substitute Punxsutawney Phil  for a more authentic Antarctic animal, a  Penguin.

Gathered on the deck of the National Science Foundation office here in Antarctica we attempted to forecast the remaining season with the utmost accuracy. In lieu of a tree to remove Phil from (Again No trees
ANYWHERE in Antarctica) we substituted for a blindfold. it almost looked like a penguin sacrifice!

After the short reading of the introduction bellow Phil was unmasked to forecast the future of Antarctic weather. A few whispers in my ear, Phil most definitely had seen his shadow. "There will be 6 more months of winter" proclaimed Phil! Not 6 weeks, 6 MONTHS! The summer season is slowly winding down to a
halt here.. The temp today was about -38F!

Cheer's
Chris

Today at 725AM, Here at Gobblers Knob, (McMurdo) Antarctica

Punxsutawney Phil,
Emperor of the Penguins.
Seers of Seers,
Prognosticators of Prognosticators,
Weather Prophet without Peer
gave the following proclamation:

Thank God I live in the land of the free and the brave
and I live in a colony and not in a cave.
I've been sleepin', been noddin'
Been living better than Bin Laden.
And I only come out to eat and have fun.
My Groundhog Day job is to study the sun.
The sky is light, the signal is strong

My Shadow I do not see, so winter will be 6 Months Long

My shadow I see, so winter will be 6 more months long.
