The house lights dimmed and a familiar fiddle rang out as the 5 gentlemen from Great Big Sea strode out onto the wide stage. From the opening notes of DONKEY RIDING, the audience of 10,000 was on its feet, singing along with the band. The energy in that space was palpable and flowed back and forth from band to audience. Obviously delighted with the crowd the b’ys gave it their all and were rewarded by unabashed love.

Jumping right into CAPTAIN KIDD after riding the donkey, the energy of both performers and spectators continued, the audience screaming its approval at the choice of songs.

Alan was obviously happy to be here at the Molson. And Bob looks pretty happy too!

“Hello then, We’re Back!” yelled Alan and the strains of LOVE ME TONIGHT came from Bob’s whistle as the backdrop dropped to reveal the Fortune’s Favour curtains. No need to “wonder if you’ll love me tonight.” It was not a stretch to say there was no doubt that the audience would do just that! They were tight in harmonies and performance, playing it up to the crowd of ten thousand. I was really glad I got here in time. It would have been a big shame to miss this. “A single note don’t make a melody,” indeed! The intricate harmonies and places where everyone is singing something different really make this song more of an anthem. I predict in future years this one will be the main opener.

“We love you all tonight here at the Molson Amphitheatre,” announced Sean and Alan launched into WHEN I’M UP with total audience participation. The fiddle player from St. John’s, Newfoundland did a wonderful job on both vocals and instrument as Sean bounced around and the audience almost sang louder than the band. When given a chance to take the chorus, the audience went wildly out of rhythm, but Alan brought us back with his strong voice. He was taking a lot of sips from his cup on the drum riser. I got the impression that four nights in a row may have strained his pipes.
