On The Road to Terra Nova
My 2006 trip to Newfoundland begins and ends with my husband of 34 years. He surprised me by taking me to buy a camera right before my trip. Mine has been working, but I can’t preview anything since a student turned the dial too far three years ago. He figured I’d want to take plenty of photos and felt sorry for me. So I walked out of Circuit City with a Canon Power Shot with a 12X optical zoom and plenty of features. God bless Vic. Plus, we recently buried his brother and I was feeling guilty leaving him home while I volunteered at the Newfoundland & Labrador Folk Festival and AtlanticFest 2006. I’m sure he was not feeling particularly good about my leaving either, but encouraged me to go nonetheless. This is the first photo I took with the new camera. I love my hubby! He's been the love of my life since 1969.
He looks a little worried. Things were falling apart before I left home – Karen had cracked up her car yet again and I was leaving with the ‘good’ car. Fozzie had just been diagnosed with Lyme Disease and was undergoing a regimen of 2 ½ pills twice a day for one month. There was trouble with the old house and our roof was leaking in the new one. We had had 2 weeks solid of temperatures above 90 degrees and no air conditioning. It was the perfect time to leave!

My oldest daughter, Heather, and her boyfriend Mike, threw us a feast the night before I left. It's always delicious when we eat there.

I had been chatting with Candace in Saint John New Brunswick for a good 6 months about my taking her to Newfoundland so she could go to Memorial University of Newfoundland. I left the city on Wednesday and would stay the evening with Columbine in Somerville, MA. GBS’s network of wonderful fans willing to roadtrip and set you up for the night never ceases to amaze me! Thanks many times to Columbine who always welcomes me on my ramblings thru New England and is a great roadtrip buddy to boot!

As I gassed up in New Jersey, this bumper sticker caught my eye.
I arrived at Columbine’s in time to go down to Johnny D’S, eat supper and see the Duhks. It was my first time seeing the Duhks and I wasn’t even sure what kind of music to expect. We ended up with a table right in front of the stage and settled in for a night of good music.

An odd collection of personalities make up the Duhks, three men and two women round out the sound. One woman plays a mean fiddle while the other does vocals and occasional percussion. The guys play lead guitar, a stringed instrument multi-instrumentalist, and a drummer. The drummer played barefooted! The female vocalist was tattooed up the wazoo and the male vocalist (multi-instrumentalist) has a serious afro. Here’s a collection of pictures from the show. I enjoyed the evening although it wasn’t enough to make me run out and buy a CD.
