Sing Terra Nova!
Early evening found me at the Folk Festival for the closing night. I had to circle the block quite a few times for to find a parking space. (uh oh! I’ve stumbled into Newfoundlandese again!) Paul Pike, was onstage as I found a spot with my Canada Day folding chair. He was an amazing performer and I really enjoyed his set. He had a great voice and combine Mi’kmac and English in his songs.

The Cavan Crowd came out onstage next and I found it was a Common Ground group composed of both Newfoundland and Irish musicians. Aiofe Murray sang first in Gaelic and later sand a song she called “Four and Nine,” a variation of “I Had But 50 Cents.” Sheamus Craigh played the fiddle and Sheamus Faye sang songs learned from his granny. “She was a great lifter,” he explained, as he described her as being able to sing the fiddle tunes. The group played a variety of tunes I was already familiar with from the Barra MacNeils and Natalie MacMaster’s repertoire.

I noticed quite a few performers in the audience. Right near me sat Peter Narvaez, Frank Maher and Sally from Atlantic Union. I lent out the bag the chair came in to a couple who were in from Portugal Cove. They had been to the festivals in Paradise, Ferryland, and Bell Island before this one. Busy couple weeks!
