Terra Nova
Isn't this horse fantastic? He's made entirely of Duct tape! Found on Duckworth St. outside a leather shop/

After supper, we took a tour of the venues of AtlanticFest 2006. It was Jim's first visit to the Carriage Works. It was an intimate little place with a square bar in the middle and a nice little stage. It had a deck off the stage, too. It was also my first visit to the Carriage Works as well as the Fat Cat across George Street. I'd been to Bridie's many time before. Gee, I hope I don't sound like a lush! Then we dropped over to Erin's to make sure everything would be ready for tomorrow night and to see if Jim could get a pint of Smithwick's this evening. Erin's is not on George Street, but 2-3 blocks away on Water Street.

Had a great time at Erin's with Geoff and Dave Panting,  Helen, and Don & Nora Shorock. Don & Nora had come over from the Ship where it was Folk Night. One of these times in St. John's I will remember about Folk Night and go. They said they saw Fran from Boston there.  They are from Kansas, but I first met them in New Jersey at a GBS show. We have kept running into each other in Newfoundland ever since.

Roger had us laughing our fool heads off reading the horoscopes in an alternative paper. Someone's was "Shake before using" and Jim's was something  like "Contents under pressure". You get the picture? We giggled our way thru the evening recalling horoscopes and making up new ones. One of the guys actually got his deodorant container out and we picked new ones.

Right before we left, Lindasy Ferguson sauntered in. She was performing at the Festival and we were worried that we hadn't heard form her  yet. But there she was, just in time!

Jim was able to get a sausage dog from a cart when we  left Erin's - first one this season!Tomorrow is D-Day - the Festival begins.

Thursday, August 10th

Well, my thoughts about going to bed early last night vanished with the sausage dog Jim ate. I needed to be woken up this morning. "Vic is on the phone!" Jim said, as he knocked on my door. I was up with speed to receive news that the USA was on Orange Alert with the discovery of a plot in England on the airlines coming to the States. Vic had been thinking about coming up today, too! Good thing he didn't!

We picked up posters and t-shirts and decorated the venues with balloons. Stopped at the supermarket for last minute supplies and helped Lillian pack up the t-shirts into plastic bags and make up goodie bags for each venue. I called all the volunteers and brought them up to date. Jim interviewed me for the ROAR. That was different! I'm usually interviewing HIM!

Here’s the line-up for the 2nd annual
AtlanticFest. It’s a European style festival with each performer moving from venue to venue every night. That means you can stay in your favorite pub and see everyone or move from pub to pub to follow your favorites.

Darrell Power – founding member of Great Big Sea, retired from the group for 3 years now. Still a wonderful person and a surprising songwriter, something we didn’t see when he was with GBS. As his last year’s bio said “It wasn’t until he laid down his guitar that he found his voice.”

Hugh Scott – seasoned performer in St. John’s, had a hit with his song Theresa Maria, consummate performer and lots of fun. Hugh’s able to read his audiences well and reel ‘em in!

Jackie Sullivan – named Female Artist of the Year and Galaxie Rising Star in 2002, with an independent album and some great songs under her belt. Her voice makes you pay attention whether singing her original compositions or trad songs. She’s a treat to see!

Scott Goudie – mostly known for his VISUAL art (he has a Gallery) he is a superb blues/jazz musician. He might walk quietly onto the stage but once he starts to play, everyone listens. You’ll find his songs running thru your head hours after.

Lindsay Ferguson – she hails from all over the place and her style has the influences of one who has traveled the world. Lindsay’s songs grab your attention and her singing style turns heads. She has personality plus.

Mike Hanrahan – A member of the Irish Descendants, Mike’s been a favorite of ours for a while. He sings trad with a commanding voice and his newest solo CD is a treasure. Who knew he wrote such great songs? Now we all know!

Maggie Meyer – the daughter of Rawlins Cross alumnus Dave Panting, hasn’t fallen far from the family tree. Only 18 years old, she packs a punch onstage and her demure appearance hides a powerful voice. Hopefully, she’ll have a CD of her own out soon.

Colin Harris – a complete surprise to me. What a great rock and roller, with a command of both his guitar and the written word. You name the genre, he can sing it! Hopefully a CD is in order soon.

Dave Panting – what a treasure this man is! A former member of both Figgy Duff and Rawlins Cross, Dave is a true multi-instrumentalist. He has entertained us many a night at Erin’s and it was a pleasure to hear about his participation in the Festival. Many albums to his credit – go buy one!

Jim Fidler – an incredible multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, producer, arranger, recording artist. There’s not enough space to list all the wonderful accolades he’s received. Hard to pin down to a genre, his songs speak to the soul as well as the ear. He has the incredible knack of putting to music the beautiful scenery and culture of Newfoundland. A national treasure, for sure, as well as a good friend!
