Oh Look! A Shortcut!
Sunday, August 20th

The sound of rain on the plants outside my window woke me and I immediately started itching. It seems that long sleeves and bug spray didn't deter all the mosquitos at the Park last night. Jim, whose only action was to wear socks under his sandals, came away with no bites at all. Hmmmmmm.

We listened to a CBC Radio broadcast from Woody Point Authors' Conference. Michael Crummey talked about his books and writing in general. That's the place where Marjorie, John and Dahmnait Doyle were going after the Bulletin of Doyles show.  I have to pick up Michael Crummey's latest book. I've loved the others. It's rainy and chilly and hot chocolate sure tastes good in the cabin's kitchen. We packed our bags and the van for the trip back to St. John's.

Hot chocolate only soothes the savage beast for a little while though, and we found ourselves back on the road to Glovertown for grub at Holloway's Pub and Grub. Lillian requested that we find the old mill where she and her buddies used to hang as kids and eat there, in view of the Terra Nova River.
We turned off the main road onto a side road then onto a gravel road which changed into a pock-marked dirt road and finally got a glimpse of the old mill.

There was a plaque there telling how over 100 men worked to build the mill which never opened - one of Joey Smallwood's failed projects. Lillian and her friends were joined by hundreds of other subsequent loiterers at the Mill, as evidenced by the grafitti on the walls.
I drove the car a little farther down the dirt road and discovered a great view of the river. The rapids made a pleasant sound and I climbed on a lichen-clad rock to get a photo of the rest of the logging operation.

Found a few blueberries which made it into my mouth. Mmmmm good!

And Lillian waded into the swimming hole just like the old days!
Let's take the shortcut!
