Road to Terra Nova 2007
It was nearing the time Bonnie had to be at work, so we left scenic Petty Harbour and dropped her off in Mount Pearl. Candace directed me without fail to Bonnie's pace of work. For not driving, she sure pays attention to the roads! We bid Bonnie goodbye and decided we didn't want to go home quite yet. So it was off to Signal Hill to see what we could see. I hadn't had my fix today, you see. And Candace never argues with me about going there. She likes it as much as I do! Look what awaited us when we got out of the car at the top of the hill! You can see the fin of the one whale and the blow from the other on the left. They showed off a lot, but the most exciting photo I got was the second one where he/she is waving a flipper.

The whales made us think of Middle Cove Beach where you can frequently see them up close and personal as they go after the caplin that swim to the shore. We didn't see any whales there but here are five photos a friend in Newfoundland sent to me when the whales were in a few weeks ago.

A whale swims along the beach in search of caplin
There's a pod of whales here - only one is visible but you can see the remnants of waves where the others had been.
See the fish jumping out of the water? That's what the caplin are after.
I couldn't believe the traffic jam that the whales' appearance caused. St. John's doesn't even see this rush of traffic during their rush half-hour! Middle Cove is only 30 minutes from downtown but a world away.
We didn't see any whales but there were hundreds of gulls in the Cove as we walked down the newly renovated visitor's entrance. The rest of the photos from here on are mine.
