Terra Nova
Folk Festival 2007
I recognised Jim Bragg from last year's festival. It's funny, I think they had him right before Jim that time, too!
Even the dogs were enjoying the music at the festival! Fitting that it was a Labrador retriever!
Jim was next-to-last on the bill and had some problems with his guitar's pick up. He had replaced the battery that afternoon, so we knew it wasn't the problem but the solution wasn't obvious. Luckily, at a festival like this there are a plethora of available guitars. SO one was offered and after JIm retuned it to his favored BAGDAD tuning, he delighted the audience by doing Curra Road , along with Rising of the Moon, Rhythm of the Goat, Song for Newfoundland and his signature song, Downtown Girl.
Jim never goes out wthout his hat that Lillian bought for him last year in Barbados. and his mode of dress was typical Newfoundlander tonight - shorts and sandals, even though I was cool, and I don't mean fashionable!
He was sporting a Newfoundland pin on the side of the hat. Newfoundland is never far from his thoughts, inside or outside his head.
Jim was well-received by the audience. It was a full tent and they sang along with Rhythm of the Goat and Downtown Girl. Vince and I sat in the front with Lillian.
Dave Penney was up last. He is a great entertainer, let me tell you. The man sings, plays accordion and fiddle, and is a wonderful storyteller!
The Emcee called him up to talk about the Accordion Revolution activity that he organized a couple years ago at the NL Folk Festival. They set a World Record for the most people playing a song on the accordion all at the same time for 5 minutes straight. Almost 1,000 people played Mussels in the Corner on their accordions, old and new players, young and ancient players, professional and amateur all joining in. A good time was had by all!
