Terra Nova
Folk Festival 2007
Jim Bragg was there again as were Burt and Dennis. I really enjoy Burt and Dennis. Their banter is as enjoyable as their songs. Two really funny guys! One from the "Suddern" Shore and the other from Clarenville, one Cat'lic and the other "not."  No matter that they come from different backgrounds, they make a great act. Last year it was just the two of them but this year they have a band backing them up..
Surprises were in store when Jim came up to perform. He started out singing A Pair of Brown Eyes! I had never seen/heard him sing in person, only on his CD, Midnight Rover. What a pleasant surprise! Not only did I hear that song tonight but he also played a song from his Friendly Fire CD - Mr. Ambassador, which I haven't heard him do in years. That song gets stuck in your head, though. I was glad it was in the middle of the set instead of at the end. He played the ones from the previous night also, as they are the ones most requested by audiences and when he sang Downtown Girl from his Gypsy CD, there was an audible note of approval from the audience. In fact, not only did he have singers join in from the audience tonight, he had some dancers in the back, too!  This song has regained popularity since the new Irish Descendants CD on which they perform it with members of Great Big Sea. Downtown Girl is often played on the radio up here but many people don't realize it's Jim's song for some reason! They also play a lot of his tunes on CBC in between segments.
You can tell from the jackets on the people in the audience, that it was much colder tonight. And the mosquitos were out in force. So Jim's attire was long pants with elastic at the bottom so the bugs didn't travel up his pant legs, and socks with his sandals. Hey, it worked for him! I got some bites in unmentionable places because my pants didn't have elastic in the legs.
Tonight's audience was much more demonstrative in their singing and applause and a lot of people stuck around to talk to the performers. Jim and Lillian sat on the sidelines as Dave Penney brought some band members up with him this evening. One of the Rangers plays fiddle, so he got up with the two wonderful teenagers named Aaron and Neil who had played earlier. These kids were quite good on accordion and guitar!
Sunday soundings
Lillian ran around getting "shout-outs" for the ROAR while Jim talked to the two young men who played with Dave Penney. I chatted with Graham and Joy Dillabaugh and their two kids, who had come up from St. John's to see Jim before setting out on vacation. Everone seemed to enjoy themselves at the Festival despite the rain. I hope they thought it was successful. Even Seamus enjoyed it!

We returned to the Pub 'n' Grub for more wings and the evening found Sandy, Candace, Vince and I drinking Pepsi. We stayed for the Karaoke, watching some really sloshed guys singing "Momma, Don't Let Your Sons Grow Up to be
Doctors." It was an experience!
