">Look here ">look here for another! I chuckled when Jim was positioning them to record. He kept telling Aaron to move back with the accordion. And I flashed back to Bob Hallett explaining that in Newfoundland the accordion was used mainly for dances as it was loud and was easier to hear than one fiddle or one whistle. When both of the accordions came out, both chairs were pushed back! You can see in this video. Click here. |
Lillian was having a grand time, as she saw the parents of her best friend in childhood, and enjoyed talking to them. She also saw a guy she had gone to 7th grade with. Vince and I were not very good partiers that night and sat quietly at the end of the table. A man whose stag party walked in after 1 AM, carried a blow up doll wearing a bridal veil. The party livened up a bit after they walked in, but Candace, Vince and I were fading fast and left "early" at 4 AM. Sandy drove home with Lillian and Jim in tow later. Candace, Sandy and I got up around 9:30 to find Vince in the kitchen cooking up a delicious breakfast! Home fries, beans, sausage, fired bologna, toast and coffee awaited us. I don't often wake up to breakfast being made. What a pleasure! Candace had a taste of Vince's brewed coffee and was hooked at first taste! This is someone who never drank coffee before and she addicted now thanks to Vince's coffee. Or maybe it was the three-times-ground coffee that Jim produced at the supermarket. But whatever the reason, we sure did enjoy it! He put plates in the oven for Jim and Lillian when they got up and bid us adieu, headed home to Witless Bay. Sandy and Candace stuck around a little bit after Jim and Lillian got up, but left by noon to go back to St. John's. Jim, Lillian and I packed up our gear and waited for Neil and Aaron from last night's festival lineup to arrive to be recorded for Jim's ROAR podcast.
I didn't see them arrive, but they must've had a truck to keep all the instruments in. Between the two of them, there were 2 guitars, a bouzouki, a banjo, three accordions and a concertina. When they unpacked their gear, it pretty much took up half the living room! Jim talked with them a bit to get to know them better. The 17 year olds met at the Vinland Music Camp in Gros Morne National Park when they were 14 years old and hope to continue to play music when they leave for University at MUN.
I tell you, I really enjoyed listening to these lads play! The younger generation is still interested in the traditional music here as in Cape Breton. I hope it keeps up. Look for them to be recording in the next few years I hope. Neil Oldford and Aaron Collis - don't forget their names!
No one in their families plays any instruments and yet they are so talented! They said that hearing Harry Hibbs' accordion inspired them to learn that instrument. And they don't see any reason to suppose that there aren't other instruments they'll learn in the future!
These kids are the real deal, folks. They were fantastic! Afterwards, Jim interviewed them for the ROAR. WHile they were packing up I spoke to them both and found out that they want to continue to play this Newfoundland music and intend to pursue it when they graduate. I was happy to hear that as they are obviously talented and deserve to be heard. Real nice lads.
Lillian sampled for audio levels as Jasmine sat quietly on the sofa and I disappeared to the hall so I wouldn't be making any noise for the session when I took photos. They played Arthur McBride (no video for that one) and Now I'm Sixty-four, some Rufus Guinchard/Emile Benoit tunes and other stuff. Listen to Jim's Podcast #57 to get all the great music from the two of them and an interview with little ole me!
Here's a few videos of the session that took place that afternoon in the cabin in Terra Nova Park. They played many more than what you can see here
