Road From Terra Nova
The stop was a little longer than we had intended at Clarenville because I dropped my keys inside the store somewhere. But some nce person picked them up and returned them to the counter. So we were eventually able to go ahead. I did have time to eat an ice cream cone, though.

The ride was uneventful but surprise! No fog at the isthmus! A first time for me. Ther may not have been fog but there was a really weird weather phenomenon. The whole time we were driving away from Terra Nova, we were followed by really dense clouds blowing from the Northeast. As soon as we were on the Avalon Peninsula, the sky cleared up pretty much and the clouds were blowing from the exact opposite direction! Lillian took a shot of the pink sky as the sun set on the Avalon.
As I drove I thought about the weekend and the things I had enjoyed - the scent of the evergreens in the forest, alternate barren and fertile landscapes, berries begging to be picked, layers upon layers of clouds in the sky. I was quite relaxed actually as we pulled into Montana's on Kenmount Road for supper. I felt like I was home instead of in St. John's as we've been to a very similar restaurant in Philly a few times. They had a lot on the menu, but I was not brave enough to try a "Philly chessesteak" sandwich. Really - you can't get one made properly outside of the Philadelphia area. I ordered the Yankee Pot Roast and Yorkshire Pudding. I had never had Yorkshire Pudding - it's not pudding, but a hollow, non-sweet pastry as high as a double muffin. Both the pot roast and the pudding were yummy! Two thumbs up! As we waited for our supper, crayons were provided for drawing on the paper table covering. We had fun! Just like little kids.

I was soooooooo tired, but unpacked the car when we got home so it would not have to be done tomorrow. I had quite a few clean clothes left over from the weekend. I always overpack! Vic called and we ended up chatting for 40 minutes. Karen's been really sick for the past few days and he was trying to help her feel better. She got on the phone whining in a voice only a mother could love. He told me about the fishing trip he had taken with friends in the Delaware Bay. Everyone caught something, unlike every single tme I've been fishing..

Today was a St. John's day. I woke up about 9:30 and had some coffee and partridgeberry pie that I bought in Terra Nova. How I love partridgeberries! Let me count the ways - pies, muffins, jam, ice cream, wine...

My first stop was Signal Hill of course. As I sat on the wall by the parking lot, I saw a white line in the water and what looked like smoke. I also spotted a flashing light behind the boat. At first I thought a boat was on fire and a Coast Guard boat had gone out to evacuate it. But when I used my zoom lens, was I surprised! There was a helicopter hovering above a boat. I surmised there was an emergency on board and they were airlifting someone out. However, it became apparent that it was some sort of training exercise involving a fishing boat and the helicopter. For an hour I watched them hover at various altitudes over the water and fly over to Cape Spear several times and back again. It was really fascinating!
