Archeology Heaven
Archeology Heaven is located here and in Ferryland. After the tour of the actual site, we got to visit the Archeology Lab and see the process of cleaning, identifyting, labeling and preserving artifacts. Here are some of the tools of the modeern archeologist:
Hardly anything is dug, mostly the soil is brushed so artifacts uncovered don't get damaged in the process. A pad for writing how deep it was buried and exactly where (in what square meter it was found) is very important. The length of string with the level attached is how you answer the where question. And all the diggers have a canvas bag that holds all their equipment.
After the artifact's location has been recorded, it is gently soaked and strained to get the dirt off. Dirt itself is also strained in increasingly smaller sieves that catch pieces of jewelry and small articles. The pieces are then tagged and dated. A clear coating of nail polish provides the suface on an artifact to write it's serial number.
Believe it or not, Elmer's Glue All is the glue of choice when it comes to putting things back together again. Here you see a pot being reconstructed from pieces found on the site. The glue is watered down. After it is put together, other fixatives are used to permanently bond the pieces.
This shows how the pots are reconstructed and then reproduced, filling in the gaps.
