Winding Down to Zero Hour
The weather over in the city looked like it was getting worse and we began to feel drops of rain from time to time. Roger the Ranger told me about how the lod lighthouse is the reason this is a National Historical Site - It is the oldest structure in the city. He had just put on his slicker - I should have taken the hint. You can see Candace and Renata on their way to the top. You could also see the cowpath better as it meandered up the hill.

By the time Renata and Candace were within spittin' distance, it was definitely raining and everyone started coming back to the parking lot.
You can tell that the camera needed to be put away because I could not keep it dry outside. We did a quick run to Petty Harbour so Renata could get a glimpse, but it was too yucky to get out and walk around. I wished Renata well and dropped her and Candace off at their respective sleeping quarters. Sheila was arriving tomorrow and would tour a bit more with Renata so I didn't feel like I was being a bad hostess. LOL! I felt like it was MY homebase I was showing off! One day perhaps... Before I dropped off the car, Lillian and I ran a few last errands. One of the errands found us in the Newfoundland Power parking lot in the city's western end. AS I waited for her to come out, a white pickup truck pulled right up next to me. I was taken by surprise because there was plenty of room in the lot and he had come from a perfectly good spot nearer to the building. Was I surprised to see our Ham Radio friend Ken, who was waiting for his wife to get off work. We had a grand chat and I told Ken about our adventures in Gull Island. Turns out he has an aunt in the next town to the north! Small world, isn't it? I apologized for not visiting him this time around and I hope he was not too miffed.. But in the meantime, I had to drop the Ford Fusion off at the rental place. I emptied the trunk, cleared out the back seat, and filled it up with gas before reluctantly giving it up. I didn't want to have to worry about it in the morning on my way to the airport, so this was the best way. The same young man who had picked me up two weeks ago drove me home to enjoy my final night in St. John's. The Last Supper was a wonderful home-cooked meal by lovely Lillian and gobbled up gratefully by Jim and myself. We ended up taking a taxi down to Erin's for one last night of music, drinks and friends. Sandy and Liz were already there with Renata and Dave Anthony was in fine form! He sang for two whole hours before he even took a break! You name the genre, he sang a song from it tonight. Absolutley fantastic - such a nice clear voice! While sitting with Jim and Lillian at the bar, a man approached me - "Anne? Anne in Philly?" Could've floored me! Turned out to be a GBS fan from the OKP who had read my Newfoundland Journals and decided to come up and see for himself. Tim and his wife Lucinda were also thrilled to meet Jim and some other OKPers at Erin's. Totally enjoyable evening, let me tell you! Jim and Lillian recorded some shout-outs for the ROAR - several by Renata, at least one from Tim and Lucinda and we just had a great time chatting and listening to Dave's clear, sweet tones. All too soon it was 3 AM and I was looking to go home for a rest. Hugs, kisses and misty eyes were in abundance at the Fidlers as I bid them adieu before we all went to bed. Gypsy made sure to get his pets in as he parked himself smack in the middle of the bed when I went to get in. I hoped to be quiet enough to sneak out in the early morning. 6:30 AM would see me on my way to the airport by way of Sandy and Seamus. Thank God she has such a big heart and could oblige me. I wondered how much sleep she'd get... Thursday, August 23rd Sandy was right on time and I was successful in sneaking out the door without waking anyone. We stopped for coffee at Tim's and she even helped me into the airport, waiting with me till I was all settled. Such a good friend! Thanks Sandy! You sure know how to make a girl feel welcome. I was whisked through the security this time and took my seat in the waiting area. This plane would definitely be full and I'm glad I thought to do the online check-in procedure beforehand so I could have the seat I wanted. When I saw this pirate ship in the airport lobby, strains of "My name is Captain Kidd, as I sailed as I sailed..." entered my mind and wouldn't leave. I guess I could have had worse songs stuck in my head.
