Bound Down for Newfoundland
After my beer ticket stint, we sat to watch the Pierre Schyler Band. I think they are from Ottawa or Montreal. But whoa! They blew the socks off all the other performers of the evening as far as I was concerned. He plays an mean fiddle, let me tell you! The band got a standing ovation from the crowd, that’s how good they were. No one else that day got a standing ovation.
Daniel Payne (Ned) was next and I enjoyed that. After him came Pamela Morgan and Frank Maher came out to play a couple tunes with her. I love Pamela Morgan’s voice. When she sings, it doesn’t go to your ears, but right to your soul. I love her new CD and anything she did with Figgy Duff. She had a lot of sound problems though. It was a sin. Despite the sound problems, I enjoyed her set much more than Anita Best’s. Dave Panting’s band was on last and I enjoyed their set too. But Pierre Schyler really blew everyone, including Pamela Morgan away.

We walked back to the hotel and settled down for a little TV. “Hey! Go back! That was Alan Doyle on TV!” Sure enough it was Alan being interviewed at the Salmon Fest which was a week or two before. He mentioned about the DVD that was coming out in October, the new CD will be released in February (“We have another 2-3 weeks of recording.”), and they’d spend September in the States. The interviewer was an idiot. She asked the dumbest questions. And there was footage of them singing “Sea of No Cares” where the audience was louder than they were! That was cool! Sea of No Cares seems to be a song that most audiences love and sing along with.

Interviewer: You’ve (GBS) been together for 10 years. Why are you still popular? Alan: Well, I think it’s the music. It was here much longer than we’ve been here. Interviewer: But they come in droves! And they come from elsewhere outside the province! And you are drawing even bigger crowds. Alan (giving her a funny look but still personable): Yes, well, they come for the music. But believe me, I’ve played plenty of gigs where hardly anyone came. I like this better. Alan was so composed and amazingly patient with this interviewer. He was grace under pressure and represented the band well. I wonder how he does this day after day, city after city, stupid reporter after stupid reporter? I wouldn't have the patience. Too soon sleep overtook us and we spent our third evening in this wonderful place.
