After the show, we went back to the house where a bunch of people were assembled to put the last minute touches on the march the next day. Diane, Mom and Sue were exhausted and went to bed. I hadn't gotten a chance to talk to Marcus all week, with him working and doing the legwork with the others to get the protest march going. I miss him dearly and needed some time to talk. We used to talk a lot when he was home. It sure was nice to do that AND give him all the hugs I could. We chatted about unions, union organizing, protest marches (yeah, I am a child of the 60's), and our family. It was so good to talk face to face and not have to worry about how much time for phone calls. I will miss him and Danni a lot when we leave tomorrow. Danni is looking better physically than she did when she left Philly so I guess Portland is sort of agreeing with her. Didn't see too much of Danni this trip and certainly not near enough of Marcus. Oh, to be independently wealthy and fly out whenever! I don't think how grateful they knew Mom and I were for letting us crash in their bedroom all week.
Saturday, September 1st
September already! Marcus was up early and we said our goodbyes and wished him luck at the March/Rally. Ate at a restaurant called Bridges on MLK where Mom and I had stuffed ourselves several times that week. Sue enjoyed spending her American money and then we took the trek downtown to see Powel's Bookstore. It is 5 levels high and occupies a city block! Of course, I was trying to show off and it backfired. Where is Powell's? 10th and Burnside? I know where that is! Guess what? I forgot to ask NE or NW! I knew where 10th and Burnside (NW) was but Powell's wasn't there. So we drove around for a while and then someone told me it was in the heart of town (NE). SO we finally got there and shopped a bit before leaving for Seattle. We saw the marchers gathering at the park nearby and wished them luck. The drive to Seattle was uneventful except for those times that Sue had a coffee or ice cream craving. We teased her unmercifully about it, too. She kept us entertained on the 3-hour ride with a variety of accents. Sure does a good Newfoundland accent!
When we actually came into Seattle, unfortunately for us, the Mariners and the Seahawks were playing on the same day near each other and traffic was a bear! ! Found RH's place where Mom and I were staying. RH was not there but had left a key with the clerk downstairs. RH's place was not where Victor had told me it was and turned out to be a good 30 minutes from Diane and Sue's hotel. We thought it'd be right around the corner. When we got to the hotel, Diane unpacked her stuff and Sue ran out for a french fry fix. I called Vic to say "Hi and I miss you" and Diane threatened me if she heard any pet names! We ended up "malling" at a nearby place and had a nice dinner there. At the mall, they teased me for my strong Philly accent and Sue worried about spending too much time in the US and "losing my vowels." Oh Sue also entertained us with the "Parking Lot Angel" song as we were riding around looking for a spot. GBS' next single! LOL! We dropped Sue and Diane off and went back to RH's without too much fuss except when I went to get off the interstate. There was no exit on the Southbound side. I had to get off at the next one and go back. Grrr. Necessity forced me to look at the map, however and I discovered an unmarked entrance and exit ramp right around the corner from RH's place. Wahoo! Had a phone message from RH when we got in saying he'd be available to see us the next day. |
