Great Big Western Trek
Sunday, August 26th - Oregon Coast

Mom was up early so I was too. :-) It was Sunday and we went in search of a Church nearby. Found one not too far away and attended a lovely Mass at Immaculate Heart Church on MLK Blvd. Learned a couple new gospel hymns, too! Rode around looking for someplace to eat breakfast. Found a storefront with the sign - Soup & Soap, a cafe/laundromat. Finally decided to eat at a coffee bar, plenty of them around here! I knew we were on the west coast when I saw a sign for cappuccino at the car wash!  Discovered that Portland has some streets that are verbs - Going St. and Failing Ave.

We also went exploring a little on our own and Mom discovered Walgreen's. Direct quote from her - "You can buy everything in here except a husband." Another store where the same quote would fit well is Fred Meyers'. We patronized a couple of those before we left.

When we got home, Marcus suggested we take a ride to the coast. It was lovely! We stopped to see the country's largest Sitka Spruce tree and took pics. Discovered that the Pacific Coast is much different from the Atlantic. There are huge rocks all over, right up the coast. The beaches are nice though and there are plenty of them! We visited Cannon Beach and Hug Beach. Saw Haystack Rock and spots where the pirate ship scenes of Goonies were filmed. Had dinner in Cannon Beach and discovered Marionberry muffins. The Marionberry is a kind of blackberry, which only grows in Marion County Oregon. Oh is it good! Hug Beach had a cave on one side. Wish it hadn't been sundown. We could have gone exploring! The ride on the Sunset Highway was breathtaking with the views of the sunset on the Ocean. Now THAT'S something I'm not used to - sunset over the ocean. In New Jersey, the sunsets in the opposite direction!

During the ride to and from the coast, Marcus talked about his household sponsoring a protest march against police brutality in one of the sections of Portland. He told us the tales of wronged citizens and that Danni had watched one incident where an innocent man was shot. He and the residents of the house were organizing this march, which would take place on Saturday.
This scene should be familiar to people who saw the movie "Gooines." The pirate ship sailed past this beach. The rock is called Haystack Rock.
Cannon Beach
There was a river which emptied into the Pacific right there at Cannon Beach, cutting part of the beach in half. Wasn't it an absolutely gorgeous day?
